Grooming

Appenzellers have a double coat that consists of a shiny and thick top layer and a thick under layer. As with all double coat dogs, Appenzeller is no different and you will have to brush them weekly to keep the hair under control. During shedding seasons daily brushing is advised to remove dead hair and to keep the dog looking good.

Appenzeller Sennenhund coat colors:

  • Black or Havana brown with reddish-brown and white markings

You will also have to check their ears regularly for any signs of infections (bad odor, redness, etc.). You can wipe their ears with the cotton ball dipped into an ear cleaner. Appenzeller Sennenhund teeth should be brushed weekly to remove tartar build-up and to secure fresh breath and healthy gums. Their nails should be trimmed when you hear their nails clicking on the floor.

Exercise

Appenzeller Sennenhunds are highly active and you must be prepared that you will have to spend a lot of time outside if you want your dog to be happy. These dogs will enjoy various fun activities including chasing, hide and seek, returning the ball, etc. If you meet their needs you can be sure that your dog will be well behaved in the house and you don't have to worry that he will develop behavior problems.

Socialization

Appenzeller Sennenhund also requires proper socialization like any other dog breed. The best way is to start with the socialization process as soon as you bring your Appenzeller Sennenhund home. The most important thing is to allow your dog to explore all different sights, sounds, people, and other animals so he could learn how to properly react in many different situations he may find himself in. With proper socialization, your dog will be well behaved and you don’t have to worry that he will develop behavior problems.

Appenzeller Sennenhund and kids

As a pet, the Appenzeller Sennenhund can be wonderful. They get along great with all family members and love spending time with them. Especially they love kids and they can be great playing partners for them.

No matter how good your dog is you should never let them play without supervision, so any unwanted behavior would emerge (nipping, tail pulling, etc.)

Appenzeller Sennenhund and other animals
